t.me vs tg:// Links

Telegram supports two link formats. t.me links (e.g., https://t.me/username) are web-based — they work in any browser and fall back to Telegram Web if the app isn't installed. tg:// links (e.g., tg://resolve?domain=username) are deep links that open the Telegram app directly, but they won't work if Telegram isn't installed. 3 Ways to Create a Telegram Link (User, Channel, Group)

There are three kinds of Telegram links, and each is built slightly differently:

1. User link — https://t.me/{username}. Requires a public username set in Telegram Settings → Username. Opens a 1-to-1 chat with you.
2. Channel link — https://t.me/{channelname} for public channels, or https://t.me/+{invitehash} for private channels. Public channels use their username; private channels generate an invite hash you copy from the channel admin panel.

How to Create a Telegram Channel Link

For a public channel: the link is simply https://t.me/{channelname}, where {channelname} is the channel's public username. You can find or set it in the channel admin panel under Channel Info → Channel Type → Public Channel. Once set, anyone with the link can view and join the channel.

For a private channel: Telegram generates a one-time invite link in the format https://t.me/+{hash}. Go to Channel Info → Invite Links → Create a New Link. You can revoke or expire the link at any time from the same panel. Private channel links are the standard for paid communities, member-gated content, and any channel you don't want indexed by Google.

How to Create a Telegram Group Invite Link

To create a Telegram group invite link, open the group and tap the group name at the top → Invite Link → Copy Link. You'll get a URL in the format https://t.me/+{hash} that anyone can click to join the group. Group admins can create multiple invite links from the same panel — useful for tracking which promotion channel brought in each member. You can also set expiration dates and member limits on each link, or revoke any link that's been over-shared. Telegram Link Not Working?

If your Telegram link isn't opening a chat, check these common causes:

• No public username — your Telegram account needs a public username for t.me links to work. Set one in Settings → Username.
• Telegram not installed — on desktop, the link opens Telegram Web as a fallback. Make sure you're logged in.
• Typo in username — usernames are case-insensitive but must be exact. Double-check for extra characters or spaces.
• Privacy settings — if you've restricted who can message you, some users may not be able to start a chat via the link.
