Generate a mailto: link. Paste an email address, add subject and body prefill, copy the HTML snippet. Works with Gmail, Outlook, and Apple Mail. Free, no signup.
Create a custom Email link in just a few steps.
Copy this example HTML code to your website:
A mailto: link is a hyperlink using the mailto: URI scheme defined in RFC 6068. Tapping the link opens the visitor's default email application (Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, whatever they use) with a new message already addressed to you. The most basic format is mailto:[email protected]. You can extend it with query parameters to pre-fill the subject and body: mailto:[email protected]?subject=Website%20inquiry&body=Hi%20there. The generator above handles the URL-encoding automatically so spaces and special characters in your subject and body do not break the link.
The three-step version:
mailto: URL, or grab the HTML snippet ready to paste into your site.mailto:[email protected]?subject={URL-encoded subject}&body={URL-encoded body}. Any characters that would break a URL (spaces, question marks, ampersands, line breaks) are percent-encoded automatically. That means a subject like "Order #123 - question?" becomes subject=Order%20%23123%20-%20question%3F in the final link. Pair the link with a email QR code for print materials, or add an email channel to your website with a Boei widget that captures leads even when the visitor does not have an email client set up.
People often use "email link" and "mailto: URL" interchangeably, but the terms describe slightly different things. An email link is any clickable element on a page that leads to email contact. That could be a mailto: hyperlink, a button that opens a contact form, a link to Gmail's web compose URL (https://mail.google.com/mail/?view=cm&[email protected]), or a link to Outlook's deep link. A mailto: URL is specifically the mailto:[email protected] URI scheme that hands off to whatever email client the visitor has configured as default. The generator above produces a mailto: URL because it is the most universal option: it works across every operating system and email client without depending on a specific vendor's webmail deep link.
A generic mailto: link (mailto:[email protected]) opens whatever email app the visitor has set as default. On a phone with Gmail installed that is usually Gmail. On a Windows PC with Outlook it is Outlook. That is a strength (works everywhere) and a weakness (you cannot control which client opens).
If you want to force Gmail's web compose window regardless of the visitor's default client, use a Gmail-specific URL: https://mail.google.com/mail/?view=cm&fs=1&[email protected]&su=Subject&body=Message. This opens the Gmail compose interface in a browser tab (assuming the visitor is signed in). The tradeoff: visitors who prefer Outlook or Apple Mail will still get pushed into Gmail's web UI. For most sites the generic mailto: link is the better default; use the Gmail deep link only when you know your audience is Gmail-heavy.
The mailto: URI scheme supports cc and bcc as query parameters. Add them alongside subject and body:mailto:[email protected][email protected]&[email protected]&subject=Hello&body=Message
Separate multiple addresses with a comma inside the same parameter: [email protected],[email protected]. Some older email clients ignore cc and bcc silently, so always test the link in the clients your audience actually uses before shipping it as your primary contact channel. The generator above focuses on the most-used parameters (to, subject, body). If you need CC or BCC, you can extend the generated URL by hand or use the pattern above as a template.
If your mailto: link is not opening the visitor's email client, check these common causes:
%20, ampersands as %26, and question marks as %3F.A Email link gets visitors to your chat. But who answers when they message at midnight? Boei's AI chatbot replies instantly, captures leads, and works across Email and 50+ other channels. From $19/month.
A mailto: link uses the URI scheme mailto:. The simplest form is mailto:[email protected]. You can add optional parameters for subject, body, cc, and bcc: mailto:[email protected]?subject=Hello&body=Hi%20there&[email protected]. In HTML it looks like <a href="mailto:[email protected]">Email us</a>.
Yes. Add ?subject= and &body= query parameters to the mailto: URL, per RFC 6068. For example: mailto:[email protected]?subject=Support%20request&body=Hi%2C%20I%20need%20help%20with. The generator above URL-encodes special characters (spaces, ampersands, question marks) automatically so the pre-filled text appears correctly when the visitor's email client opens.
The mailto: scheme supports cc and bcc as query parameters. Example: mailto:[email protected][email protected]&[email protected]&subject=Hello. Separate multiple addresses with a comma inside the same parameter. Note that some older or lightweight email clients ignore cc and bcc, so test in the clients your audience actually uses.
Yes, but only if Gmail is set as the default mail handler in the browser. Chrome and Firefox both let Gmail register itself as the default when the user accepts a permission prompt. If a visitor clicks your mailto: link and nothing happens, it usually means they never accepted the prompt. As an alternative, you can link directly to Gmail's web compose URL: https://mail.google.com/mail/?view=cm&fs=1&[email protected]&su=Subject&body=Message, but that forces Gmail even for users who prefer Outlook or Apple Mail.
An email link is any clickable element that leads to email contact: a mailto: URL, a link to Gmail or Outlook's web compose, or a button that opens a contact form. A mailto: URL is specifically the mailto: URI scheme that hands off to whatever email app the visitor has set as default. mailto: is the most universal option because it works everywhere; provider-specific deep links are useful when you know your audience uses a specific webmail service.
The most common causes are (1) no default mail client set on the visitor's device, (2) special characters in the subject or body not URL-encoded (spaces should be %20, ampersands %26), (3) the link is inside a sandboxed iframe that blocks mailto: schemes, or (4) the visitor uses a browser where webmail (Gmail, Outlook Web) is not registered as a mailto: handler. The generator above handles URL-encoding automatically, so most breakage happens on the visitor's side, not in the link itself.
Generate your mailto: link above, then open Instagram, tap Edit Profile, and paste the full mailto:[email protected] URL into the Website field. Followers who tap it open their email app with a pre-addressed message to you. If Instagram strips the mailto: prefix in the tap-through behavior, use a lead-capture widget like Boei instead, which lets you collect email addresses directly on your bio-link landing page.
Yes. mailto: has been the standard URI scheme for email links since RFC 2368 in 1998 and was updated in RFC 6068 in 2010. Every browser and email client supports it. Modern alternatives (Gmail deep links, Outlook web deep links, contact forms) coexist with mailto: rather than replacing it. For a universal contact link that works across every OS, browser, and email client, mailto: remains the default choice.
