Call Link Not Working?

• Missing country code — always include the + and country code (e.g., +1 for US, +44 for UK) for reliable international support.
• Desktop without VoIP — on desktop computers, tel: links require a VoIP app (Skype, FaceTime, etc.) to be configured. Without one, the link may not do anything.
• Extra characters — spaces, parentheses, and dashes in the number can cause issues on some devices. Use digits only after the + sign.

How to Create a Click-to-Call Link (Step-by-Step)

A click-to-call link is any hyperlink that uses the tel: URI scheme to trigger a phone call. To build one:

1. Take the destination phone number in international format (start with +, add the country code, then the number with no spaces or dashes). Example: +14155551234.
2. Prefix it with tel:. The result is a valid call link: tel:+14155551234.
3. Wrap it in an HTML anchor to make it clickable: <a href="tel:+14155551234">Call us</a>.

Difference Between a Phone Number URL and a Call Link

The terms "phone number URL" and "call link" refer to the same thing: a URL that starts with tel: followed by a phone number. Both names point at the same tel: URI scheme defined in RFC 3966. Some naming variants you'll see:

• Call link / click-to-call link. Most common in marketing and web-design contexts.
• Phone number URL / tel URL. Used in technical documentation and browser vendor docs.
• Callto link. An older, deprecated Skype-specific scheme (callto:). Not standardized. Prefer tel:.

How tel: URLs Work

A tel: URL is a URI scheme, not a hyperlink to a web page. When a browser encounters a tel: URL it does not fetch anything over the network. Instead, it asks the operating system: "which app handles tel: URIs?" On iOS and Android that handler is the phone dialer, which opens with the number pre-filled and waits for the user to press call. On macOS and Windows it depends on the user's installed VoIP apps.

The full format from RFC 3966 is tel:<phone-number> where the phone number is in "global" form: a leading +, the country code, and the subscriber number in digits. Extensions can be added with ;ext= (for example tel:+14155551234;ext=42). Non-digit characters like spaces, dashes, and parentheses are allowed in the source but ignored by dialers, so international format with digits only is the most reliable.

Can You Make a Fake Call Link?

"Fake call link" is a common search term with two different meanings, and neither is a prank tool.

Test / placeholder call links. If you want a call link that does not dial a real subscriber (for demos, screenshots, tutorials, or testing your HTML), use a phone number from a reserved fictional range. In the US, numbers of the form +1 555 01xx xxxx are set aside for fiction and never assigned to a real subscriber. So tel:+15550100 is a safe placeholder that formats like a real call link but does not connect to anyone.

Fake incoming call apps. A separate category of apps schedules a fake ringtone on your own phone so you can excuse yourself from a meeting. Those are apps, not links, and they have nothing to do with the tel: URI scheme. This generator only creates tel: URLs, so it cannot spoof a caller ID or trigger someone else's phone to ring.
