How to get there: Go to Setup → Business, select your business, then open Profile → Preferences → Visitor Experience.

Boei works with or without a visitor cookie. Choose Use cookies in your website settings.

With cookies

Boei remembers a visitor after they start a conversation themselves. Simply loading a page, showing a welcome message or opening the widget does not set this cookie.

The cookie lets visitors continue their recent conversations on the same website and browser. It expires after 96 hours. Sending a message extends this period. Reading a page or checking for replies does not.

Boei sets one cookie, boei_visitor_<website ID>, on your website. It contains a visitor ID, a separate access token and its expiry date. It does not contain names, email addresses or messages. The token grants access, so treat it as private. Other scripts on your website can read this cookie. Boei stores only a hash of the token on its server.

Browsers may block or remove cookies sooner. Conversations may then stop carrying over between pages. Chat still works on the current page.

Without cookies

Boei keeps the current conversation and visitor details in memory while the page stays open. It does not read or write visitor cookies, localStorage or sessionStorage. Reloading or leaving the page starts fresh.

For prompts shown only once, Boei uses the previous page's address when available. This avoids repeating them during normal browsing. A browser that hides this address can cause a prompt to appear again.

Messages you send are still stored in your Boei inbox under your data retention settings. Turning off browser storage does not delete messages already sent.

Direct iframe embeds without the website script keep the conversation in memory only. Use the website script if you want conversations to carry over between pages.

Before loading the Boei script, set:

window.BQ = window.BQ || [];
window.Boei = window.Boei || function (options) { window.BQ.push(options); };
Boei({ cookies: false });

After your banner accepts the relevant storage, call Boei({ cookies: true }). To withdraw that choice, call Boei({ cookies: false }). The current chat stays open. Stored browser access is removed and replaced with access held only in memory. The SDK choice overrides the website setting.

This switch controls Boei's visitor storage. Third-party integrations and your own scripts have their own storage rules. A form's consent checkbox is separate from this setting. Decide with your privacy adviser whether your use of chat storage needs consent. Boei does not classify every customer's use as exempt.

Shared computers and logout

On logout, call Boei.reset(). This clears visitor details, drafts and recent chats from the widget and ends access through the old token. It also resets other open tabs on the same website. It keeps the cookie preference. This does not delete conversations from your inbox.

A plain email address passed through the SDK only fills in fields. Access to another device's recent conversations requires a verified, signed identity. Links in reply emails give access only to the linked conversation, within the same 96-hour access period.
