Attention grabbers are visual and behavioral features that help capture visitor attention and encourage them to engage with your widget. You can configure these globally or customize them for specific pages.
How to get there: Go to Setup → Widget in the top menu → click your widget → scroll to the Attention Grabbers section.
Trigger Types
Every attention grabber (CTA, glow, badge, auto-open) supports four trigger types so you can engage visitors at the right moment:
- Time — After N seconds on the page (default; great for welcome messages)
- Scroll — After the visitor scrolls past N% of the page (good for blog posts and long pages)
- Exit intent — When a desktop visitor moves their mouse toward the tab/close button (last-chance offers)
- Inactivity — After N seconds of no scrolling or clicking (polite helper for stuck visitors)
Exit intent and inactivity are desktop-only.
Available Attention Grabbers
1. Call-to-Action (CTA) Message
Display a message bubble next to your widget to proactively engage visitors.
Configuration Options:
- Message: The text to display (max 350 characters, supports markdown)
- Trigger type: Time, scroll, exit intent, or inactivity (see above)
- Display effect: How the message appears (none, streaming, typing, fade, slide, pop)
- Show close button: Allow visitors to dismiss the message
- Auto-close after: Automatically hide the message after N seconds (0 = don't auto-close)
- Only new visitors: Show only to first-time visitors
Example Settings:
- Message: "How can we help you?"
- Trigger type: Time, after 30 seconds
- Display effect: Fade
- Show close button: Yes
2. Glow Effect
Add a glowing animation around your widget to draw attention.
Configuration Options:
- Trigger type: Time, scroll, exit intent, or inactivity
- Duration: How long the glow lasts (in seconds)
- Intensity: Light, medium, or strong glow effect
- Color: Custom glow color (uses your brand color by default)
Example Settings:
- Trigger type: Time, after 5 seconds
- Duration: 60 seconds
- Intensity: Medium
- Color: Auto (matches widget)
3. Notification Badge
Display a small numbered badge on your widget button.
Configuration Options:
- Badge count: Number to display (1-9)
- Trigger type: Time, scroll, exit intent, or inactivity
Example Settings:
- Badge count: 1
- Trigger type: Time, immediately
Automatically open your widget to maximize engagement.
Configuration Options:
- Trigger type: Time, scroll, exit intent, or inactivity
- Only new visitors: Trigger only for first-time visitors
- Skip on internal navigation: Don't re-open on every page change within your site
Example Settings:
- Trigger type: Scroll, at 50% of page
- Only new visitors: Yes
Using Multiple Attention Grabbers
You can combine multiple attention grabbers for maximum impact. For example:
- Show a glow effect after 3 seconds
- Display a notification badge immediately
- Auto-open the widget for new visitors after 8 seconds
Each grabber works independently with its own timing.
Page-Specific Rules
Instead of showing attention grabbers on all pages, you can customize behavior for specific pages.
Setting Up Page Rules
- Switch from "All pages" to "Specific pages"
- Add a page rule with:
- Path: The URL path to match (e.g.,
/pricing)
- Match type: How to match the path
- Action: Customize or hide widget
URL Matching Types
| Type |
Example |
Matches |
| Exact |
/pricing |
Only /pricing exactly |
| Starts with |
/pricing |
/pricing, /pricing/annual, etc. |
| Contains |
pricing |
/pricing, /my-pricing-page, etc. |
| Ends with |
pricing |
/pricing, /annual-pricing, etc. |
Page Rule Actions
Customize: Apply different attention grabbers for this page
- Add different grabbers than the default
- Or remove grabbers entirely for a subtle experience
Hide: Completely hide the widget on this page
- Useful for checkout pages, thank you pages, etc.
Match on Traffic Source (UTM and Referrer)
In addition to the URL path, a page rule can also match on where the visitor came from. Expand Optional: only match certain traffic sources in the rule and fill in any of:
- UTM source (e.g.
google, newsletter)
- UTM medium (e.g.
cpc, email)
- UTM campaign (e.g.
spring-sale)
- Referrer contains (e.g.
facebook.com)
All filled-in fields must match (AND, not OR). Empty fields are ignored. UTM matches are exact; referrer is a "contains" check.
Example: Greet Google Ads visitors on the pricing page
- Path:
/pricing, match type: Starts with
- UTM source:
google, UTM medium: cpc
- Action: Customize, CTA "Welcome from Google Ads!"
Mobile Settings
You can disable attention grabbers on mobile devices:
- Default: Apply to all pages
- Per page rule: Control mobile behavior for specific pages
This is useful when you want a more subtle mobile experience.
Best Practices
- Don't overwhelm: Using all grabbers at once can be distracting
- Test timing: Adjust the delay to match how long visitors typically stay on each page
- New visitor focus: Use "only new visitors" for welcome messages
- Match your brand: Customize glow colors to match your brand
- Hide on checkout: Use page rules to hide widgets during checkout flows
- Monitor analytics: Check if attention grabbers improve your click-through rate
Common Use Cases
Welcome New Visitors
- CTA message after 5 seconds, only for new visitors
- Message: "👋 Welcome! Need help finding something?"
- Glow effect (red color) immediately
- Badge showing "1"
- CTA: "Limited time offer - 20% off!"
Exit Intent Save
- CTA grabber with Exit intent trigger
- Message: "Wait! Got a question before you go?"
- Desktop only (mobile has no exit-intent signal)
Idle Helper
- CTA grabber with Inactivity trigger, 60 seconds
- Message: "Still looking? I can help."
- Only fires if the visitor stops scrolling/clicking, so it never interrupts active readers
Product Pages
- Page rule for
/products/* (starts with)
- Auto-open after scrolling 50%
- CTA: "Questions about this product?"
Checkout Pages
- Page rule for
/checkout (exact match)
- Action: Hide widget completely
